Specialist doctors, tests and treatments

Seeing a specialist in the state system requires a referral, which means that the primary care physician (PCP) or a specialist in another speciality evaluates the need for a specialist consultation and makes a referral to a specialist. The physician may also refer for tests, treatment, or hospitalisation. The document is issued electronically and made available in the patient’s Internet account. Sometimes such a document must be registered at the relevant clinic (this applies to physiotherapy treatments – you must register for treatments within 30 days of the referral being issued, otherwise it becomes invalid). Once issued, the referral is valid until the treatment process is completed.

Information about e-referrals.

You do not need a referral to the following specialists:

  • Psychiatrist
  • Gynecologist and obstetrician
  • Oncologist
  • Venereologist
  • Dentist
