Registration of residence

Registration confirms actual residence in a given premises. It is an administrative act and does not give any rights to the occupied premises.

The obligation to register applies to all persons living in Poland – both Polish citizens and foreigners. You can register at the municipality office in your place of residence or online, with the proviso that the possibility to register online applies only to Polish citizens and EU and EFTA citizens and their family members. Other persons can register in an office by showing a document confirming their right to reside in Poland.  The law indicates the deadlines for fulfilling the registration obligation:

  • for foreigners – citizens of EU or EFTA countries or the Swiss Confederation (and their immediate family members) – the registration obligation arises for a permanent or temporary stay lasting more than three months, and must be fulfilled no later than the 30th day from the day of arrival at the place of residence;
  • for foreigners – citizens of countries other than those mentioned above – the registration obligation must be fulfilled no later than the 4th day, counting from the day of arrival at the place of permanent or temporary residence.

Note:  If the owner of the premises does not want to confirm the fact that a person resides there, this should be reported to the municipality where the property is located. Then, the authority will conduct an investigation to determine whether the person actually lives in the premises. If the circumstance is confirmed – the authority will issue a decision on registration
