Registration of a car in Poland

Takes place at the District Office (and in cities with district rights – at the City Office) competent for the place of residence of the owner of the registered vehicle. Both Polish citizens and foreigners can register a car in Poland. The owner, or their proxy, must be present during the registration (if the vehicle has co-owners – this applies to all of them). It is possible to register a car for a natural person or a legal entity (then the person representing the entity or their attorney must be present during registration). The registration obligation applies to both new and used cars. Registration must be done within 30 days of acquiring or bringing the vehicle to Poland.

If the owner of the vehicle is an entrepreneur conducting business in the territory of the Republic of Poland in the field of vehicle trade, the deadline for submitting an application for vehicle registration is 90 days. If you purchase a new car from a dealership, you can authorise that dealership to register the vehicle.

Legal basis:
Articles 73-74b of the Road Traffic Act of June 20, 1997 (i.e., Journal of Laws of 2023, items 1047, 919, 1053, 1088, 1123, 1193, 1234, 1394, 1720, 1723, 2029; of 2024, item 834).

The registration process depends on whether the vehicle was already registered in Poland or was imported from abroad. A detailed description of the registration process and a list of required documents are available Ministry of infrastructure website.
