Municipality Office, City Office

Municipalities are the smallest units of local government in Poland. We distinguish between rural, urban-rural and urban municipalities. Depending on the type and size of the municipality, the names of their bodies and offices vary.

In rural municipalities, there is the Municipality Council (the local law- making body) and the Head of the Municipality (the executive body), which operate in the Municipality Office.

In cities, the law-making body is the City Council or Municipal Council. In small cities the executive body is the Mayor, and in large cities (over 100,000 residents – the City President). City bodies hold their offices at the City Office or Municipal Office.

At the Municipality (City) Office you can handle the following matters, among others:

  • registering for permanent or temporary residence,
  • making an identity card,
  • registration of business activity,
  • payment of certain taxes and fees (e.g., garbage collection fee, market fee),
  • confirmation of a trusted profile,
  • civil status matters – such as obtaining a copy of a birth, marriage or death certificate – will be handled at the Civil Status Office, which is an organisational unit of the City Office,
  • education – there are departments in city or municipal offices that deal with education. There you will get information on the operation and enrolment of public schools, kindergartens and crèches operating in the area, as well as the districts of primary schools (streets, neighbourhoods, or towns assigned to a particular school).

District office

Is the office of the district authorities. Here you can deal with, among other things, matters related to vehicle registration and obtaining a driver’s licence.

  • driver’s licence – foreigners can obtain a driver’s licence in Poland if they stay here for at least 183 days in a calendar year. After taking a course and medical examination and passing the test, the formalities are completed at the Department of Motor Vehicles of the relevant district office,
  • vehicle registration – The Department of Motor Vehicles in the district office also handles vehicle registration.

Note ! In Poland, in addition to municipalities and districts, there are cities with district rights, which carry out both the tasks of municipalities and districts. In such cities, you will handle both municipality and district matters described above at the Municipal Office (City Office).
