Exchange of foreign/international driver’s license

The procedure for exchanging a driving licence issued in another country for a Polish document is different for documents issued in different countries.

Driving licences issued in countries of the European Union, the Swiss Confederation or a member state of the European Free Trade Agreement do not have to be exchanged for a Polish document and can be used throughout their validity period. The possible exchange of such a document is possible at the request of the person concerned, without the need to present a certified translation of the driving licence and pass a theoretical exam. If such a driver’s licence has expired, it can also be exchanged, but after meeting the conditions necessary for the renewal of a Polish driver’s licence (that is, among other things, after submitting a valid medical certificate).

Other driving licences honoured in Poland must be exchanged for a Polish document after 6 months of residence in Poland. If the document was issued in accordance with the model specified in the Geneva or Vienna Conventions, the exchange does not require passing a theoretical exam. In other cases, it is necessary to obtain a positive result of the theoretical exam. This is an exam taken under the same rules as the exam for people who want to obtain a driver’s licence in Poland.
