Institutions of higher education in Poland often have residential facilities – dormitories. This is standard for public universities, but public schools are also developing this type of service. In dormitories, undergraduates, graduate students and sometimes university staff can be accommodated in single or multiple rooms. Usually, kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared by several rooms. The standard of living in dormitories is gradually improving. These types of rooms are becoming increasingly popular because they are much cheaper to rent than rooms on the open market. Unfortunately, universities do not have places in student dormitories for all students, and there are often many more applicants than places available. Therefore, it is important to know that universities have a separate procedure for allocating places in halls of residence – an application must be submitted by a certain deadline, and the criteria for allocating places are specified in the relevant regulations (the financial situation of the applicant’s family, the distance of the university from the applicant’s place of residence, often also the family situation, health situation or academic results are taken into account).
